How to Clean Up Storage When Your PC or Mac Is Running Out of Space

A “storage full” warning is one of the most common reasons people assume they need a new computer — when the real fix is usually 20 minutes of cleanup. Here’s what actually reclaims meaningful space.

Find out what’s actually taking up the space

Windows: Settings > System > Storage shows a breakdown by category (apps, documents, temporary files). Mac: Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage does the same. Don’t guess — this tells you whether the problem is one giant folder of old downloads or genuinely too many installed apps.

The biggest wins, in order

  • Downloads folder. This is almost always the single largest source of forgotten clutter — installers, PDFs, images you opened once and never deleted.
  • Temporary and cache files. Windows’ Disk Cleanup tool and macOS’s built-in storage recommendations clear these automatically and safely.
  • Apps you haven’t opened in 6+ months. Both operating systems can sort installed apps by last-used date — uninstall what you genuinely forgot you had.
  • Local photo and video libraries. If they’re already backed up to the cloud, most photo apps let you free up local space while keeping cloud access.

If you’re still nearly full after cleanup

That usually means the original drive was simply undersized for how you use the computer, not that you did something wrong. An external drive for cold storage (old photos, archives you rarely access) is a cheap fix that doesn’t require replacing the whole machine.
